By the words of an ancient historian Piny, the tomb consisted of four parts: high base with a gallery of 36 columns was placed below, and statues of Mausolos and his wife stayed at the top with 24 ledges. An earthquake destroyed the tomb in 14 century. Stone fragments remained on the place of the tomb were used later by knights-crusaders for building of Bodrum fortress, which exists nowadays. The statues of Mousolos and Arthemisya, which decorated the top of the tomb, together with those found inside, are kept in British Museum now.

Bodrum Castle, or medieval St. Paul’s Castle, is a wonderful example of architecture of the 15th century.
